The State We're In On the Eve of
World Archaeological Congress (WAC) 6: Archaeology in Ireland vs
Corporate Takeover
An article by Maggie Ronayne, Global Women's Strike, Ireland,
on the privatisation of archaeology which prioritises
development over communities and important historical sites
that are their heritage. The
article deals with the
site of Tara and its landscape, which
has evidence of sacred, pre-Christian
ceremonies and later was the seat of the high kings and queens
of Ireland. In recent centuries it was the scene of rebellion
and political meetings in the struggle against the British
empire. There is a major campaign
against building the M3 motorway through this valley and for
this heritage, considered by archaeologists to be of
international importance, to be preserved. This article
appears in the academic journal
Public Archaeology
to coincide with the sixth World Archaeological Congress in
Dublin and is also online at: www.ingentaconnect.com/content/maney

The Constitution of
Ireland:
Why the
Irish Constitution Must Recognise Workers in the Home and Pay Equity
Endorse Our Wording for Article 41.2
"While it is sexist to refer to work in
the home as a woman’s “life” and “duty”, it would be even more
sexist to obliterate the only constitutional recognition of unwaged
caring work done at great personal cost by generations of women, and
its vital contribution to society’s survival and welfare." |
