Since May 2006 the state of Oaxaca has been the scene of an extraordinary community-teacher movement against fraudulently elected governor Ulises Ruiz and the repression he unleashed. Teachers have been on strike and 1.5 million people (of a population of 3.7 million, over 70% Indigenous) have marched to defend their rights. Widespread human rights abuses, including assassinations, disappearances, rape, torture, and arbitrary detention, have been reported by several international organisations.  Two more people were beaten to death by police on 16 July and many were arrested...
