Shannon protesters spoke for many of us

Sometimes things just sound wrong. Right now, Margaretta D’Arcy, a 79-year-old woman who is undergoing treatment for cancer, is serving a three-month sentence in Limerick Prison for protesting the US military’s use of Shannon Airport.
A few years ago, I met a former Apache helicopter pilot who had done countless stints in Iraq and Afghanistan. He didn’t know much about Ireland, but had been here more times than he cared to remember.

Letter from Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate to the Global Women's Strike in support of Margaretta D'Arcy

I am sorry I cannot be with you at this important action in support of our dear and courageous Margaretta D’Arcy, but I will be with you all in spirit.

Margaretta is an inspiration to us all and we are deeply grateful to her for her great Witness and reminder to us all of our responsibility to call Governments to uphold human rights and International laws, and the Irish Government to uphold its constitution and protect its neutrality.

Message of Support to the Women’s Peace Camp at Shannon Airport in Ireland 8th March, International Women’s Day

We send our love and solidarity to you in your effort to to free Margaretta D’Arcy and to free Shannon from the US or any military. We will be with you in spirit. We are outraged at the imprisonment of a 79 year old grandmother and cancer patient for protesting the Irish government’s use of this civilian airport for US wars, its complicity in US war crimes and its illegal destruction of Irish neutrality.
