A slow-motion genocide is unfolding in Haiti as paramilitary death squads, funded by the Haitian elite and equipped with high-powered US-made weapons run rampant, committing massacres and rape.

One million people have been internally displaced; more than half the population is suffering acute hunger. The Trump administration plans to deport half a million Haitian refugees back to these horrors.  International support is needed more than ever.

Haiti’s grassroots movement continues to resist. Like in Palestine, the people of Haiti are being punished for never giving up their struggle for freedom.    In 1804 the Haitian revolution overthrew the slave masters, winning independence from France 60 years before slavery was ended in the US. The success of Haiti’s revolution led to the emancipation of enslaved people throughout the Americas. Haiti became a beacon of hope, offering sanctuary for enslaved people, and giving resources to Simon Bolivar to free Latin America and end slavery.

In 1825, France sent warships to force Haiti to pay their former enslavers 150 million francs ($115 billion in today’s money) for their “lost property” (this “debt” was then taken over by City Bank) – daylight robbery which has impoverished Haiti to this day.

This money belongs to the Haitian people and must be given back!

In 2003 President Jean Bertrand Aristide demanded that France pay restitution. Nine months later he was overthrown in a coup orchestrated by France, the US and Canada.

Watch or read the outstanding speech by former First Lady Mildred Aristide: Haiti and the Global Movement for Reparations.

As people around the world come out in millions to stop the genocide in Gaza, we must also stand with Haiti, and end the manufactured starvation and death squads which are hitting women and children hardest.

We all owe a debt to the Haitian people for their remarkable and determined struggle, which is often overlooked.  May 18th is celebrated throughout the Haitian diaspora for the creation of the Haitian flag in 1804.

JOIN THE INTERNATIONAL ACTION for Haiti

On 20th May 2025, two hundred years after France imposed a “debt” on revolutionary Haiti, global actions will demand justice for the Haitian people. We must press the French government to pay back the money it stole and stop the US administration killing people by providing weapons and deporting Haitians who have taken refuge in the USA.

We call on you to take action today.
