Women Human Rights Defenders Collective in Thailand statement on International Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) Day

To the People of Thailand,

Today, 29th of November is International Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) Day, A Day to recognize women caring for and defending the rights of family, community and nature. Women who are fighting for a better life for everyone.

Women in Thailand, especially mothers, have been pushed further into poverty from failed economic policies that favor big corporations and the rich. Our households carry more debt than any other developing nation. Putting food on the table is a daily struggle for millions of women in Thailand.  Women must also battle to protect their families from COVID amid policies that are confusing and unclear. Basic equipment such as masks and ATK kits are not supplied. Relief is hard to get and woefully inadequate. Migrant workers get no support at all. Sex workers, whose workplaces have been closed longer than any other sectors, are denied compensation and relief. Stigma, especially against the poor and migrants is fueled by government agencies seeking scapegoats to cover for their inadequate policies. State Welfare reform has been refused, ignoring the demand of disabled people and the elderly. Meanwhile businesses, from garment companies to gold mining, are being allowed to exploit our labor and our natural resources.

As we get poorer, our hard-earned tax money is spent on unnecessary military hardware without our consent. The government should be investing in caring not killing. Our sisters in Burma may have looked up and seen the plane pass over their heads as it carried the Thai Foreign Minister on his shameful trip to visit the Myanmar military regime who are terrorizing the people. Our borders are closed to people fleeing the violence. while our taxes support their attackers.

Too many of us have been charged simply for peacefully defending our community, livelihoods, and nature. Others regularly face the threat of water cannons and tear gas. Sisters are behind bars denied bail, unable to attend exams, or to be with their loved ones. Mothers are outside the jails fighting for their children to be released. And we all live with the fear of who will be punished next for daring to stand up and speak out?

Today on International WHRD Day we step over the fear knowing that together, we are building a better Thailand for all. History shows us that no dictator can last forever. There are not enough guns or prison cells to silence the forces of freedom for long.
